U-Value

This is the measurement of how effective a skylight is at keeping the heat from escaping the inside of a room.  The lower the number, the better insulated the skylight is.

Tinted Glass

Tinted glass can reduce the sun’s glare, effectively acting like sunglasses for your skylight.  Bronze and gray tints are our normal offerings, but a variety of tints in varying degrees are available for an additional charge.

Tempered Glass

In the tempering process, glass is heated to approximately 1200° F (650° C) and then rapidly cooled with air. This process locks the outer surface of the glass in compression which dramatically increases the glass strength.  When fully tempered this glass is approximately four times stronger than a piece of annealed glass. More importantly, when […]

Side Hinge Opening Skylight

The hinge is mounted on one of the longer sides of a rectangular skylight.  When installed, the hinge should be at the top of the skylight.

Self-Cleaning Glass

An environmentally safe coating that virtually eliminates the need for cleaning.  This revolutionary technology only requires sunlight and water/rain to activate its process of destroying and washing away organic materials from the surface.  Your glazing stays cleaner longer and will dry quickly with minimal spotting or streaking.

Removable Screen

The frame in Western Skylights opening models is designed for removal of the screen for cleaning purposes.

PVC Thermal Break Inner Frame

A PVC thermal break inner frame acts as a barrier to prevent condensation build up.  Condensation develops when cold and warm temperatures mix.  Western Skylights incorporates a PVC frame design with a built-in gutter system too.  This design allows any condensation to flow along the gutter to the bottom of the skylight through weep holes […]

Outside Curb Dimension (OCD)

Western Skylights are manufactured to fit the Outside Curb Dimension (OCD).  The OCD dimensions are derived by measuring the width and length from one outer side to the opposite outer side of the curb.  All custom size skylights require the OCD to quote and manufacture.

NFRC Certified

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) has developed a labeling system to compare the energy efficiency of windows, doors, and skylights.  The label contains the product’s U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, Visible Transmittance, and Air Leakage.

LODz 272

Low E stands for “low emissivity”.  Low E glass was created to minimize the amount of infrared and UV light that comes through the glass without affecting the amount and quality of light.  The microscopically thin coating reflects heat and is transparent.  Low E models maintain year-round comfort. In summertime, they block oppressive solar heat […]
